“She has been called Occult Science on the threshold of the Sanctuary of Isis, but she is really the Secret Church, the House which is of God and man... She is the Moon nourished by the milk of the Supernal Mother... Shekinah.”
- Waite, The Pictorial Key...
This is one of the rare instances where Waite explicitly provides the Qabalistic correspondence. Even Case, who embraced the idea of diseminating the knowledge of the Tarot, didn’t even include that correspondence.
Lunar attributes always come in threes. This is most clearly presented in the diadem worn in Waite’s version. The waning, full, and waxing moons represent the triple Goddess Artemis-Selene-Hecate/Diana-Luna-Trivia. This is described in Thelemic texts as the “triple cord of silver.”
This trinity is represented on the Tree of Life through the Path of Gimel, the Sphere of Yesod, and the trump The Moon. Artemis/Diana symbolizes the influence from Kether descending into Tiphareth. Selene/Luna is the full moon/womb of the Mother, (Yesod). Hecate/Trivia is the “crone”, or post-menopausal woman, (the Moon card).
